This is one idea for the magic system of FA 2.0
Magic originated with the djinn. Born from smokeless fire, they drew their power from not only within themselves, but from the Earth.
Then, the djinn taught magic to man, teaching them to draw on their own power to cast magic. But the djinn were punished by the gods for giving magic to man, and were forced to serve any man who could capture them.
Well, things went on for a short time before most of them killed each other.
With many wizards dead and the djinn completely extinct, the few that remained dwindled and hid. After all, magic power is useless if someone slits your throat in your sleep, or shoots you in the f*cking face.
Cut to present day, where only a small handful remain, never associating with one another for fear of being killed. Then, by some mysterious event, a small percentage of the world's population (about 10,000 people) gain superpowers.
---------------
Magic starts in the will, and then extends out into the physical world. The djinn were able to do this directly, but humans can't. They have to use at least one of several different media to translate the will into magic.
[Core Media]
Earth: The earth is the greatest source of magic. Though humans can't draw power from it as the djinn did, they can still use it to channel their own magic. This can be done through wood (wands and staves are common), soil, even rocks. Fun Fact - The phrase "fighting dirty" originated from wizards who would cover themselves in soil to enhance their magic. This was seen as a "dirty trick", something most wizards considered underhanded and low.
Body: One's own body can be used as a medium for casting, such as through movement or positions that enhance the flow. Most wizards used movement to some degree; it was the hardest medium to completely cut out.
Sound: Various sounds, from grunts to music to speaking in the djinn language, can aid in casting magic.
Mages are those who use movement and sound (spoken word), but not earth.
Wizards are those who use wand or staff, movement, and spoken word.
